WHO?
Every school day, around 225,000 NSW children travel to school and back home by bus.
For some, it's a single bus route. For others, it's multiple routes — involving multiple bus stops and transport interchanges.
WHERE?
Across more than 59,000 bus stops throughout NSW — with children gathering at busy stops and transport interchanges, often beyond the immediate supervision of schools or parents.
WHAT CAN HAPPEN?
Assault. Bullying. Sexual assault.
A medical emergency.
Extreme weather, fire or another emergency.
EVIDENCE
📊 Using the latest NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research tables, 1,351 assaults were recorded at bus, rail and other public-transport premises across Greater Sydney in the year to June 2026. That is approximately 26 recorded assaults every week.
The overall figure was broadly stable, but assaults specifically recorded at bus premises increased from 287 to 304—an increase of 5.9%.
👮 NSW Police are already treating transport safety seriously. Since Operation Waratah began in 2024, Police have arrested more than 1,800 people and laid more than 3,000 charges while targeting violent and sexual offending across trains, buses, ferries, Metro services and surrounding precincts.
WHY?
Because a high-use bus stop isn't just a sign beside a road.
For part of every school day, it becomes a gathering place for children.
